Hands on with Apple Vision Pro

Today I finally went to the Apple Store for a demo of Vision Pro. I’ve been interested in it ever since Apple announced it, not so much as a potential purchase but for the technology it contains. For what it really represents, I’ve always thought of it as a potential game changer placing the ball firmly in the court of developers.

Having finally put Vision Pro on my head and done the calibration, (they put optical inserts in to closely match my prescription, so if you wear glasses don’t worry, Apple have you covered) the view opened up so I could see the Apple Store again. I was absolutely blown away, it didn’t feel like I was really seeing an image on a screen. Instead it looked like I was seeing through the Vision Pro, this was an incredible start.

As I got walked through the interface and how to interact with apps I found it very intuitive and picked it up straight away. I got shown some panoramic photos first, which looked so much better than when you see them on a screen. They were great, but then I got shown spacial photos and videos. All I can say is WOW! These were unbelievable and it really felt like I was in the photo. Nothing like 3D TV of old, this really was 3D and very immersive. The video just felt like I was sitting there in the room as well.

By this point I was just in awe, I expected good things from Vision Pro but this was way beyond what I’d imagined. Then came the immersive experiences, starting with a scenic back drop which was very nice. But it was the next one, the moon that I almost started to cry. I’ve always wanted to go to the moon but accept that it’s unlikely to ever happen. One of those childhood dreams if you will. This was just mind blowing however, I really felt like I was there and looking around. It was so convincing in fact that I kinda feel like I can tick it off my bucket list.

The more the demos went on the more impressed I was, it was apparent that this technology is truly groundbreaking. What Apple has accomplished is no small feat, for those saying Meta make something similar for way less money I say sure it looks similar but functionally and technologically they are not the same thing. The price tag Apple has on Vision Pro is, in my opinion, worth it if you have the bank roll to match it. Personally I don’t feel the need to purchase it, yes it would be cool but it’s obvious that applications in education, engineering and medicine are where this will truly shine. It is a device that has immense potential, all the right pieces are there but it’s up to developers to really take advantage of that.

One thing is certain however, in trying out Vision Pro I really feel like I have taken a look into the future. Apple has something here, if you haven’t tried it you really should. Demos are free and there’s no pressure or expectation for you to buy it. In fact they really do just want you to experience it and believe me, you really should.
